Udon Thani is located in North-Eastern Thailand and is the capital of the province bearing the same name. It came to prominence during the Vietnam War due to the proximity of US air bases. This resulted in the city developing some western facilities such as bars and cafes serving coffee, which are still in evidence today. The city has a population of 500,000 and is an important commercial center regionally. As such Udon Thani hotels are well equipped for the business traveler with many having a business center and facilities such as Wi-Fi as standard.
There are certainly a number of Udon Thani hotels to choose from if you are visiting the city. These range from centrally located hotels, ideal for the business traveler to more resort like complexes. The latter are generally located in the surrounding province of Udon Thani and offer facilities aimed at the leisure traveler. These include outside pools and sun loungers, private balconies as well as a hotel bar and restaurant. Whether you are staying in a resort style hotel or one which is more aimed at the commercial traveler there are several features of Udon Thani hotels which should come as standard. These include air conditioning, a mini bar, a TV and room service. Some hotels will be able to offer you extras such as a 24 hour front desk and airport transfers and you may even find that you can hire a bicycle through the hotel should you so wish. In fact bicycling is just one way for visitors to Udon Thani hotels to keep fit, others include a swim in the pool or use of the hotel's fitness centers.
Udon Thani has an airport and its location makes it an ideal gateway for many visitors looking to travel in either north-eastern Thailand or neighboring Laos, Vietnam or Southern China. The city also has a train station and bus station along with good infrastructure.
The city has a vibrant night life catering for all tastes. First time visitors to the city should seek local advice depending on what they are looking for. There are some streets which cater more for foreigners and others with more of a local feel and emphasis. Eating out presents a dilemma in as much as you have to choose which of the many restaurants to sample. The city offers a wide choice of cuisines from local Thai to western style cuisine. Those who enjoy shopping will also not be disappointed. There are two large shopping malls in the city. The newest, built in 2009, is UDTOWN which also bears the distinction of being Thailand's largest open air shopping center.
The city also boasts a number of Buddhist temples. A trip to the local Udon Thani museum is also worthwhile. It has a wide range of exhibits ranging from local handicrafts to examples of geology. One of the best times of year to visit is April where for three days the city plays host to the Song Krang festival. One of the key features of the festival is the throwing of buckets of water - an activity which both locals and foreigners (known locally as farangs) take part in.
However it is for its past that Udon Thani is most often visited now. Approximately 35 miles from the city lies Ben Chiang. This important Bronze Age settlement, which is also a cemetery, was declared a world heritage site in 1992. Most Udon Thani hotels will be able to arrange a visit to this fascinating site.
Another worthwhile day visit is Phu Phrabet. A mountainous retreat which hosts a cave where you can find silhouette paintings which are reputed to be 4,000 years old, Phu Pharabet covers a large area and is of historical interest.
However despite these two excellent and fascinating sites, it has to be said that Udon Thani is not on the mainstream tourist trail. It has good shopping and facilities but many of the buildings are concrete, without much evidence of old style buildings. As a result many visitors use it and its excellent transport links and infrastructure as a stop off point to start their journeys into its neighboring countries. The majority of visitors staying in the city tend to be businessmen. Whatever the reason for their visit Udon Thani hotels offer guests a comfortable and relaxing base in the city.
